Kelly Castro: Men&Women

Please join the Drawing Room in celebrating Kelly Castro’s solo show of two divergent, yet equally introspective bodies of work. These works have never formally been shown and it is a true honor to debut them at the Drawing Room. Through stunning, detailed portraiture, Kelly uses photography to explore the lines that define men and women, and the lines that blur. Please join us in celebrating this exciting body of work.

The opening reception is August 17th. The exhibition will be up through September 13th.

In the Between (carryover from PublicWorks)

I was invited to create a large scale mural at Public Works SF in July of this year. In addition to the mural, I also created a series of paintings that actually were the beginning of the mural and continued to intertwine with the mural as it was growing. Though the paintings were finished in the studio there were always considered a piece of a much larger project. I’m pleased to share these pieces in the Drawing Room gallery and created a similar mural in this space to encapsulate the works.

For the Love of Space. Artist reception.

During the month of February the Drawing Room is hosting a series 'Happenings', exhibitions and related events that focus on the process of art-making and drawing and how it fits into our daily lives. In this call, the focus is on SPACE - literally and metaphorically, and how it inspires the composition of a piece. Drawing is the development of mark-making and space is the area that connects and defines the composition and other elements in a drawing.

The exhibition will be on view for a short time from February 23-25th.

For the Love of Line. Artist reception.

During the month of February the Drawing Room is hosting a series 'Happenings', exhibitions and related events that focus on the process of art-making and drawing. In this call, the focus is on LINE and how it informs artist's work and the impetus to create, follow and develop the course of a line.
Drawing is the development of mark-making and lines are typically a focal point or key ingredient in that development. This exhibition will include work by local SF Bay Area artists who are not only acknowledging the importance of line, but challenging the parameters within which line is used.

This exhibition will be on view for a short time from February 16th-18th.

For the Love of Words: the Aesthetics of Poetry

An evening of poetry reading with the eloquent and imaginative Carlos Suarez, Olivia Sears and Barbara Paschke.

Carlos Suarez, photographer, poet, story-teller and observer of humanity will share his beautiful poetry, as he describles the power and importance of infusing art into every corner of our lives. Argentinian by birth, Carlos has led an incredible life traveling and exploring the world. He will be reading from his published works Rivermarks and Between Rivers.

Olivia Sears, president and founder of the Center for Art and Translation. The Center is "dedicated to finding new, overlooked, and underrepresented voices, brought into English by the best translators, and to celebrating the art of translation. (Their) publications, events, and educational programming enrich the library of vital literary works, nurture and promote the work of translators, build audiences for literature in translation, and honor the incredible linguistic and cultural diversity of our schools and our world." Olivia will be reading the works of Italian poets Maria d'Arezzo and Ardengo Soffici.

Barbara Paschke has been involved in translation for many years, as both a translator and translation advocate. Her publications include Riverbed of Memory; Volcán; Clandestine Poems; New World, New Words; and literary travel companions to Costa Rica, Cuba, and Spain. Barbara will be reading her translations of Latin American poetry.

Reading will begin promptly at 4:30, and coincides with the exhibition First Impressions: work by Britt Henze and Renée DeCarlo.

First Impressions with Brit Henze

I’m giddy with excitement about my next collaboration with artist Brit Henze. Brit (@ladyhenze) and I met while working on our murals at the Salesforce Transit Center last August. We immediately hit it off and since then I’ve been conspiring about how she and I can do something together. I can’t imagine a better opportunity than to have her share her process with the Diving In mural. Brit is a muralist and her works can be seen all over the city - but instead of driving all of the place looking for them, just follow her on IG She’s been a busy girl and all her works are there for the gawking. Please stop by Saturday January 19 during the day while as we’ll be painting together.

Diving IN

Diving IN

This is the Drawing Room’s first collaborative event with Renée with the structurally observant and light sensitive painter, John Musgrove. Both artists have participated in Open Studios together and were invited to do “live painting” events with ArtSpan at the DeYoung Museum. These events are such an incredible experience for both that when conspiring ways to share their process in the Drawing Room space, the live-painting experience really seemed the perfect way to kick-off things off. John’s new body of work is playful, dynamic and is true to the notion that in life, you have to take risks and fly with grace (or your best shot) and conviction. Eyes onward and forward.

I will be working on the large drawing that I’m building throughout the space - and incorporating it around some of John’s Divers who will be diving across the walls and interacting with Renée’s mural that meanders throughout the space.

Please come by Saturday, December 8th for a live painting session and to meet the artists.
